The Small Things

How well do you do the small things in your relationship? The things your partner may not thank you for when you do them, but notices when you don’t. Over time, it's easy to stop doing these small things as life gets hectic and they appear unimportant. You unintentionally fall out of routine of doing the small things.  Although small things may seem trivial, they are huge to the long-term survival of your relationship.

Love Tip #1

Think about what you can do or have done for your partner that they will appreciate

Brainstorm some things your partner might appreciate. Also, consider the things you use to do at the beginning of your relationship when you were falling in love. A wise person once said, “what you did to get your partner is what you need to do to keep your partner.” Do they like love notes, your cooking, or taking out the trash timely before being asked? Identify what would put a smile on your partner’s face.

Love Tip #2

The small things you do for your partner should come from the heart

Never expect a response or be disappointed if you don’t always receive a thank you for the small things you do. The small things should be done out of love for your partner and should come from your heart. Don’t get discouraged, keep doing the small things, and your relationship will positively benefit when this is put into practice on a regular basis.

Love Tip #3

Periodically check your performance

We're not talking written, formal self-evaluations here, but take time to see how you're doing. You can even set a recurring, annual reminder on your calendar. This way, as life happens, you can adjust and get back on course. Think of a boat. We'll call it Titanic. Boats cannot be easily moved and changing its course takes time. The same is true in our relationships. Checking to make sure you stay on track will help you to avoid looking back and wondering how your relationship has gone so far left.
